September: Building Good Habits

Instead of saying you are what you eat, we should be saying you are what you do. There is almost nothing that will determine your personality, priorities, and overall state of mind quite like your habits. 

It’s been said that it takes 28 days to quit something, but over time we see that it actually takes 40 days. It takes 90 days to fully build a habit and significantly longer for that habit to become a part of who you are. 

While these are all just averages, some of the factors that can fundamentally impact habit formation include:

  1. Pain that motivates us to change

  2. Reward or pleasure associated with change 

  3. The support system that we have around the change

  4. Attachment and connection to what we are trying to give up 

All month long we will be adding new weekly content to the YoJo Portal to support creating the habits that help you be the version of you that makes you feel the best in your own life. Yes, we said makes you feel the best, not be the best. So often people are striving to be a better version of themselves. We think you’re already pretty great! We want to support your habits so that you can FEEL as wonderful as you already are. We are looking at habits as a way to enhance your quality of life. At YoJo, we believe that when quality of life is good, everything else follows suit. 
Sounds pretty great, right? So where is the best place to start? It starts at the foundation, or your support system. This includes who you are around, the boundaries you have with those people, everything you are consuming and exposed to, and how you use your time.

Everything listed above is what electrifies you and gives you life, or electrocutes you and burns you out.

To get started at looking at which habits in your life (particularly in regards to work) are electrifying you or electrocuting you, read through these questions:

  1. What do you do in the evening to ensure you wake up refreshed the next morning and approach your day with the most resilience and creativity possible?

  2. What do you do in the morning in the first hour of work and how does that impact your day?

  3. What do you do in the last hour of work to set yourself up for the next day?

  4. Who do you talk to about work when you’re having a hard time and need to be pumped up or to have someone to listen to you? And how does that make you feel?

  5. Who do you show up for when things are hard? How do you support them and how does that make them feel? How does it make you feel?

  6. What is one thing you could change that would drastically change the quality of your life? What habits currently support that change?

  7. What do you spend the most time outside of work doing?

These questions are a great starting point. And they are designed to give you the power to start to look more deeply at your own daily patterns and understand what is really supporting you. 
As you evaluate, be easy on yourself. Some of these realizations and changes to follow will come with ease and others feel impossible. 

This could be based on how many resources we have, the stage we are at in our lives, our own relationship to change, our current health, ect…
